What should I expect during my consultation?

The first step in the TMS treatment process is determining whether or not TMS is an appropriate treatment for you. This is done in a consultation with Dr. Wajda, who will review your symptoms, treatment history, and possible treatment options. When you contact Esano Corporation, our staff will schedule this evaluation.

What is a TMS Therapy treatment like?

During the first treatment, which lasts about an hour and a half, Dr. Wajda determines the precise location to place the coil and magnetic strength appropriate for the individual patient.

During treatment, the patient relaxes in the NeuroStar® chair (seen below) while the magnetic pulses are administered. Patients often wonder what the magnetic pulses will feel like. TMS is not painful. Patients report that the pulses feel like a slight tapping or tingling (this is due to stimulation of nerves in the scalp), but this sensation usually dissipates quickly. In fact, patients often become so relaxed during treatment that they fall asleep. Patients are invited to bring their iPods or CDs to enjoy their own music during treatment.

After the treatment, you can drive and resume your normal day. TMS is non-invasive, meaning it does not involve surgery, and also non-systemic, meaning no drugs are used, and therefore no drug side effects. The few TMS side effects that have been reported are irritation or discomfort at the treatment site and headaches which are usually reported as very mild.

Treatment sessions are then repeated each day using the settings initially determined by Dr. Wajda. The treatment of depression involves sessions 5 days a week for 6 weeks, although this can vary depending on a patient’s response to treatment (and it will vary if conditions other than depression are being treated). A tapering set of treatments is sometimes used to ensure your improvement. As you progress through your therapy, Dr. Wajda, and the TMS staff will regularly assess your progress.
